Spirit Fire, which was formally founded in 2018, is a story of how pastoral care within the Church can bear fruit.
In 2017, Luis was encouraged to reach out to Teresa by his diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator, Jasmine Salazar of the Diocese of Brooklyn.
Jasmine only knew about Teresa after having “met” her through reading The Healing Voices Magazine, as well as seeing Teresa’s webinar offered by the USCCB to help diocesan ministries learn about survivors’ experiences.
Teresa had become involved as a co-founder of The Healing Voices Magazine in 2014 only because Thomas Tharayil, the Survivor Minister of the Archdiocese of Chicago, had introduced her to Michael D. Hoffman and other survivors who then decided to launch an online magazine.
Tom only knew about Teresa after reading her first book, Restoring Sanctuary, about which he knew only because Francis Cardinal George, OMI, had recommended the staff read it in 2010.
Teresa had written Restoring Sanctuary only because the then-Vicar General in her diocese of Arlington encouraged her to use her talents and professional skills to help others heal.
